Employment Judges to sit alone

As part of the Government’s plans to overhaul the Employment Tribunal system it has been announced that Employment Judges (formerly called Chairman) will normally sit alone in unfair dismissal cases as opposed to the traditional Employment Judge and two lay members forming the panel. The aim is to speed up the system and reduce costs.

The draft Employment Tribunals Act 1996 (Composition) Order 2012 which provides for Employment Judges to sit alone in such cases has been published and is expected to come into force on 6 April 2012.
